There is an empty MS Access database which you can use to make new database
by copying 2 files. To create a new database first make a copy of the empty template database NetHDEmpty.mdb file using Windows explorer. E.g. copy NetHDEmpty.mdb file to mydatabase.mdb. Then make a copy of the MSAccessEmpty.udl file to mydatabase.udl and double click on mydatabase.udl file.. Adjust the database location to be mydatabase.mdb and exit the .udl file editor. You now have a new database and a corresponding .udl file that points to it. This has taken the current contents of the empty or initial database and copied them to the newly created database. The empty database contains a number of pre-defined generic types, fields and device types. It also contains one area/client, one site, and one user. You can edit these items to reflect the items you require in every new database Once created you can upsize the new database to SQL server if required, either now or at a later date. See the installation instructions for details. Importing from Active Directory / LDAP Optionally you can choose to syncronise or import user details from an LDAP directory such as Active Directory. To do this first set the default LDAP import query string on the setup screen, general tab. This string will be used as the default for any new sites. Then at site level, use edit site to set the query string as required. Any users that match the query string will be regarded as being at that site. You can then right click on the site in the tree view and choose to sync/import. A screen showing the users allows you to further restrict who is imported. You can set an LDAP filter if you need to have more control over which users are imported. This is done as the end part of the LDAP string and uses square brackets. Put the filter along with an 'and' condition inside [ ] at the end of the string. E.g. LDAP://CN=Users,DC=MyADdomain,DC=co,DC=uk[and department='alness'] The LDAP fields or attributes are matched to NetHelpDesk fields using the LDAP matching table in the setup screen. This allows you to choose how the Active Directory fields are related to the NetHelpDesk fields. Importing Data from Excel Spreadsheets Optionally you can read data from an excel spreadsheet into NetHelpDesk. This can be done for user details and device details such as a spreadsheet list of PCs. To do these functions first format the spreadsheet with the data in fields with column names that match the data field names used within NetHelpDesk. See the 2 sample import spreadsheets to see the layour required. For user details the column sequence must be exactly as it is in the sample spreadsheet. The column names are ignored. For device details the spreadsheet can contain details of more than one equipment type. Each time you wish to start a new equipment type, put a row showing its field names as they are called in NetHelpDesk for the device type you are importing. The sample spreadsheet has two equipment types - PC and Router. To use the spreadsheet, select the site name and either the requests or equipment view. Then right click and choose import from spreadsheet. It is best to validate the data first. Duplicate users are not added. Duplicate devices are added. Once complete, refresh the site to see the imported users and devices. |
