2. SITES

Sites are normally readily identifiable. If you have sites that have a large number of devices or contain devices linked by private circuits, consider making them separate sites. Sites with more than a hundred devices are probably best split into two sites.

You may wish to think of departments within a site as being separate sites. e.g. HQ-Finance and HQ-Sales. You may be more interested in the network structure than the departmental functions.

Think about what data fields you wish to keep concerning each site. Some fields are set up for you, but you can edit them or add others, as you require. Most users want address details and the name of a site contact. You may want to keep track of who is the out of hours contact. Review the site data fields that NetHelpDesk comes with. List the site fields using the setup screen and add any you require.

Once you have an idea of the sort of areas and sites you require, add them via the main screen treeview or go to the map view and choose the add area/client button. Complete the screen and then add a site. Optionally, fill in the default telephone number for all users at this site. Once you have added the site, it will appear on the map screen in the top left hand corner. Select it with the mouse and drag it to the position on the map you require. Finally, choose edit site to complete the site entry.

Repeat this for other Areas/Clients and sites.

If you only want one area, use the edit area/client button to edit the Area One name that is pre-defined in the empty NetHelpDesk database.

3. GENERIC DEVICE TYPES

Types of devices can be grouped together into a higher level group called a generic type (e.g. Modems, Routers, PCs). These generic types all end with a letter 's' to indicate that they are groups of devices. The NetHelpDesk empty database comes with a number of generic types setup. The empty database also contains one actual device type of each of these generic types.

Make a list of the kinds of devices that you have. These will become the NetHelpDesk generic types. You could have:

Modems
Bridges
Repeaters
PCs
PABXs
Servers
UnixBoxes
Cables

NetHelpDesk includes these generic types in the empty database as most companies require this grouping and have these kinds of devices. You can easily edit these names if you require. It's easier to edit the name than delete and add a new one.

Note: the bitmap or graphic that is displayed for a generic type has a filename of the generic type name truncated to 8 letters with +'.bmp' appended. Spaces not allowed. You can specify the bitmap for each individual device type if required.

You may prefer to record details at a lower level by manufacturer:

Racal Modems
Multitech Modems
Gandalf Bridges
Spider Bridges
3COM Routers
Olivetti PCs
IBM PCs
